(1886 - 1977) 

 

Born in Liège (Belgium) of Swiss parents. Schooling and studie: school and humanistic gymnasium in Lausanne; musical studies in Lausanne and Berlin ( R.Rössler); Geneva Conservatory, 1906-1908 (O.Barblan, O. Schulz); Schola Cantorum in Paris, 1908-1916 (Vicent d’Indy, composition; A.Decaux and Louis Vierne, organ; B. Selva, piano; A. Gastoué, Gregorian chant). Professional activities: organist of the Rédemption church in Paris (1910-1916) and of Saint-Jean in Lausanne (1916-1925); professor at the Lausanne Conservatory (music history and sightreading, 1918-1926), professor for organ and history at the Neuchâtel Conservatory (1924-25); director of the Geneva Conservatory (1925-1957) and dean of the keyboard department (1957-1961); founder and president of the Concours international d’exécution musicale de Genève (1938-1959); juror on the panel of numerous international competitions, member of the committee of the Swiss Musicians’ Association (1925-1937; 1953-1955 as vice-president).
