Description

* 1957

Andrea Basevi was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1957. He began studying with Mario Moretti, then graduated from the Conservatory of Turin in Choral Music and Chorus Conducting with Don Virgilio Bellone, and in Composition with Gilberto Bosco. He continued his studies with Brian Ferneyhoug at the Staatlische Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg, and with Luciano Berio in Florence. An important stage in his education was a Course in Ethnomusicology with Simha Arom at the Accademia Chigiana, Siena. After being noticed at the 1989 “Concorso Bucchi” with a musical fairytale broadcast by RAI, he has twice won the Competition “Gioco e Musica” of the magazine “Amadeus” and the Vigliano prize. He is interested in many areas of music: he has composed music for drama for the Repertory Theatres of Genoa and Turin, written film music for the “Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia”, Roma, and has received special mention from Ennio Morricone in a Chigiana Academy competition. He has worked extensively on the music/voice relation, producing radio works on texts by author Roberto Piumini. With Piumini he has created a number of performances in which author and composer work together as performers, creating an original blend of new music and poetry. He has been active in primary education, as director in Genoa of the Choruses of the Scuola Elementare M. Mazzini and the De Amicis Library. With Roberto Piumini he has produced the books for children, with cassettes, on musical instruments and notation, published by Bompiani of Milan. Basevi has involved other composers in projects to various mediums: “Montale: the poet’s voice”, “Music for Van Dick”, “For Giorgio Caproni”, “The typographic man of Pirella-Sanguinetti”, “Concert for Memory”. He has composed and produced two short operas: Zazie, adapted from Raymond Queneau, and Pinocchio, from Carlo Collodi, Peter Pan from Barrie and Alice from Levis Carroll. He is Artistic Director of “Associazione Sant’Ambrogio Musica”, which promotes contemporary music in Liguria. He teaches Harmony at the Conservatory of Alessandria
