Born in Guanabacoa, La Habana, Cuba (22.11.1972). She studied composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in La Habana, under the teaching of Carlos Farinas and Harold Gramatges, graduating “cum laude” in 1996. and conducting with Guido Lopez Gavilan. As a piano student, she also attended the Conservatorio A.C.Canturla and, with Andres Alen, the Escuela Nacional de Arte. During her staying at the I.S.A., she followed workshops led by well known guest composers and performers - among them Julio Estrada, Thomas Kessler, Luigi Abbate, Edgar Alandia, Stefano Scodanibbio – and she was active herself as a teacher of poliphony and orchestration in the same institute. In 1997 she received the invitation from the Musikhochschule in Basel (Switzerland) in order to follow a one-year-course in computer music and composition. In 1998 she received a grant in the framework of the VIII International Composition Course in Villafranca del Bierzo (Leon, Spain), where she studied under the teaching of Christobal Halffter, Tomas Marco and Mauricio Sotelo. In the same year she has been invited in the III International festival “Women in Music” organized by the “Adkins Chiti Foundation” in Fiuggi (Rome). Due to a commission of a new work (Resonancias for clarinet and electronics) during autumn 1999 she was guest composer of the Electronic Studio in the CDMC – Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. Resonancias was performed by the English clarinet player Roger Heaton in the year 2000 at the above mentioned Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and also at the Festival of Electronic Music in Aquila (Italy). In 1999 she also attended a Computer music course at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano with Alvise Vidolin and Giovanni Cospito. In 2001 she received a commission from the Insomnio Ensemble Amsterdam for Phantasmagoria for 11 instruments which was performed at the Young Cuban Avantgarde concert in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, and later on also Parma (Italy) conducted by F. Paris. In 2002 she has received an Erasmus scholarship which enables her to attend composition and Hungarian folk music courses at the Conservatory of Music of Szeged (Hungary) with Lajos Huszar. Ailem Carvajal has composed vocal/instrumental works for different chamber and orchestral ensembles, performed in the framework of contemporary music festival in Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Holland, Italy and moreover electronic and tape music, stage and film music. Some compositions have been awarded national and international prizes, as the “Premio UNEAC” (1996), Women Composers of Venezia (2004) and took their performance by the Cuba National Symphony Orchestra. She is member of the UNEAC (Union Nacional de Artistas y escritores de Cuba), and founder of the SODAMC (Society for the Developing of Contemporary Musical Art) at La Habana. At the moment she works as a teacher in the field of music initiation and composition for children and is concluding her musical studies in Italy: Composition at de Conservatorio “A. Boito” of Parma, under the teaching of Luigi Abbate, and Computer music under the teaching of Francesco Giomi.
